The House

The house was built in 1969  and built to last. In other words, nothing had really changed in the past fifty years. Last July we started deconstructing what certainly had been a cherished home for a family for many years. We, literally, took it apart. Our boys helped alongside their friends and our neighbors. As we found small mementos; school pictures, forgotten "George's Room" lettering on a bedroom door, etcetera we tucked them back into the bones of the house for safe keeping. Hopefully, someone will do the same again someday.

In the spirit of sweat equity, we decided to paint the interior ourselves. That started this past week and I've learned a few things.
When your husband is also the general contractor, just do what he says, even if he's bossy. It's really best. We had a few miscommunications in the process. Nothing critical. Our closets aren't painted the intended color but they look just fine.
Also, if you are not a professional painter, blue tape is your friend. Use it and use a lot of it. "Cutting in" is a skill I do not possess.
Painting takes a long time. Longer than you think or plan for. Sigh.

Also, it's a true blessing that the hubs and I share musical taste.

Before and (almost) After

I'm guessing we are about half way there. Tile and flooring starts next week. Then installation of doors, trim, cabinets, countertops. The list goes on. I'm secretly hoping for a move in date of my birthday in late May.

I guess that isn't a secret any more.

  2. LOVE that you tucked moments back into the "bones" of the house. Just as we found treasures in the walls of our original farmhouse on Vashon, I hope you will add notes about the Iles Foster family into this house. Behind the kitchen cabinets is a good place if you didn't get them into the walls. Love, mom.
